Trini-Bajan Collaboration Tops Internet Chart
A recent collaboration between local rap group, Spotrushaz and Bajan MC, Trezay (real name: Trevor Goring) of Bajan group, Poundas entitled “Bring It” (Caribbean Stew) is currently ranked number one on the Latin Music Chart of popular internet website, www.artistopia.com.
The spicy collaboration, which also features vocals from Trini-born, Louisiana-based MC, “Truth Universal” (Tajiri Kamau) and local dancehall artiste, “Trilla” (Kervin Prescott) is also blowing up on Bajan radio stations and is currently receiving heavy rotation on three major urban stations in Barbados.
Yet to be released here in Trinidad, the track was recorded on the highly-infectious “Shake It” Riddum: produced by Aaron “Shortman” Peters and put together at Third Degree Studios using various audio files sent via email from the respective contributors.
“The power of the Internet has changed the way we make music,” said Nigel “BDangerous” Telesford. “This is just one of several International collaborations we have initiated and completed via the Internet over the last year. Through trend-setting social networks such as myspace.com and other interactive websites, we have been able to forge associations with artistes, producers and other major industry players without ever leaving these shores.”
“Of course, we fully intend to leave these shores come 2007,” Richard “Chromatics” Raj-Kumar hastened to add, “and we already have several show dates lined up in North America. It’s about time for Spotrushaz to take this Trini talent out and around the globe.”
“We just had to make sure we set up shop and got our business affairs straight first,” concluded Wade “TIM Starr” Christian. “Aside from all the legal, technical stuff, what we did in 2006 was to mobilize our local fans and supporters into action, with the first two installments of The Life We Chose Tour and The Mary Warner Mixtape. Now, its time to spread our wings and see what the rest of the world thinks of this Tiefhead Music.”
Spotrushaz has been in existence for over seven (7) years and more recently, refined their unique sound to include elements of Reggae, Calypso and of course, Hip-Hop, thus creating a genre they call Tiefhead Music. Spotrushaz has opened for such International acts as: Sean Paul, Ludacris, Bounty Killer, as well as hip-hop veterans, Slick Rick and Doug-E-Fresh.
Poundas has existed in Barbados for over ten (10) years, with Trezay being the originator of the genre he calls Chip Hop (a combination of Calypso and Hip-Hop). Poundas were awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and have opened for acts such as Fat Joe and the Terror Squad.
More recently, Poundas video for their hit single, “Call De Police” has been nominated in the Best Rap/Hip-Hop Video category, with Trezay’s 2006 solo single, “246 Girl” nominated in the Best Rap/Hip Hop Single category for the upcoming Barbados Music Awards, scheduled for January 5th at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.
